FEU Class of 1961 Alumnus bestowed Sagamore OTW Award

Philip S. Chua, MD, FACS, FPCS
Dr. Philip S. Chua, MD, FACS, FPCS, a distinguished member of the Far Eastern University Institute of Medicine’s Class ’61, of which he was class president, was recognized with the prestigious Sagamore of the Wabash Award in the United States (Source: Wikipedia). This award, one of Indiana’s highest honors, has previously been bestowed upon notable figures such as President Harry S. Truman, President George H.W. Bush, astronaut Gus Grissom, and other esteemed educators and scientists.
A celebrated medical professional, Dr. Chua’s Class achieved eight placements in the 1961 Philippine Medical Board Licensure Exams, including a remarkable First Place. His career in medicine led him to the Texas Heart Institute in 1972, where he served as a Cardiac Surgery Fellow under the world renowned heart transplant surgeon Dr. Denton A. Cooley. Today, Dr. Chua is a retired cardiac surgeon based in Northwest Indiana and Las Vegas.
Dr. Chua has also played a significant role within the FEU community. He served two terms (totaling 10 years) on the Board of Trustees for the FEU NRMF under the leadership of Dr. Josephine C. Reyes. Additionally, he is the past president and is currently Chairman Emeritus of the FEU-DNR School of Medicine Alumni Foundation in the USA.
Alongside his medical career, Dr. Chua contributes weekly columns to Malaya, a national daily newspaper in the Philippines, as well as to four other publications in the United States. He is an active medical missionary, frequently joined by his wife and two daughters, and is a sought-after international lecturer in medicine.

Married to his FEU classmate, Dr. Farida Isip-Chua, a retired pediatrician, Dr. Chua is the proud father of five children, all of whom have followed in his footsteps to become physicians, with three married to fellow medical professionals.
